How Do You Winterize a Hayward SP1592 Power-Flo Matrix?

Back to my Hayward SP1592 ownership story

Short answer: Hayward’s Power-Flo Matrix instructions say to drain the water from the pump and piping before freezing weather, remove the pump’s drain plug, disconnect the pump from its base, and store the drained pump in a dry enclosure.

The basic winterizing sequence

  1. Turn off power to the pump before draining it.
  2. Lower the pool water below the relevant inlets as your pool setup requires.
  3. Drain the pump and connected piping as completely as possible.
  4. Remove the drain plug from the bottom of the strainer body.
  5. Disconnect the pump from the base after it is drained.
  6. Reinstall the strainer lid and drain/strainer plug for storage.
  7. Store the pump dry and keep the motor dry.

Hayward specifically warns that allowing the pump to freeze can damage it. The manual also warns against wrapping the motor in plastic film or bags because trapped condensation can contribute to corrosion.

Do you put antifreeze in the SP1592?

The manual says not to use typical antifreeze solutions in the pool/spa system. It makes a specific exception for propylene glycol, but the basic storage instruction is to gravity-drain the system as far as possible rather than leave water in the pump to freeze.

What changes in spring?

Hayward’s restart sequence is essentially the reverse: securely mount the pump, reconnect intake and discharge fittings, refill the pool to the correct level, and prime the pump according to the instructions.

This page summarizes the model-family manual. Your pool’s filter, heater, chlorinator, and plumbing may have their own winterizing requirements too.
