What Size Pipe or Hose Fits the Hayward SP1592?

Back to my Hayward SP1592 ownership story

Short answer: published specifications for the Hayward W3SP1592 list a 1-1/2-inch port size. Hayward also pairs the SP1592 with 1-1/2-inch suction/discharge hose in at least one factory filter system.

Does that mean every 1-1/2-inch fitting will automatically work?

No. “1-1/2 inch” tells you the nominal plumbing size, not the exact fitting style on every old pool setup. Above-ground pools may use flexible hose, adapters, unions, or rigid PVC transitions.

If you are replacing an existing pump, look at how the old pump actually connects. Reusing the plumbing can be simple when the old setup already matches, but a nominally correct pipe size can still need a different adapter or union.

What about 2-inch PVC?

The SP1592 itself is commonly specified around 1-1/2-inch plumbing. Hayward-compatible union adapters exist for installations that transition to larger rigid plumbing, but I would not buy a random 2-inch fitting based only on the pump’s outside thread diameter. Match the exact adapter/union to the Matrix pump connection.

Why this was a useful replacement pump for us

When our old pump died, we wanted something close to the setup we already understood. That is still the right way to think about this model: verify the electrical and plumbing details first, then decide whether it is actually a drop-in replacement for your pool.

If you are checking the exact pump, this is the Hayward SP1592 / W3SP1592 listing I bought from.
