Can the Hayward SP1592 Discharge Horizontally or Vertically?
Back to my Hayward SP1592 ownership story
Short answer: yes. The Hayward Power-Flo Matrix is designed so the discharge can be converted between horizontal and vertical orientation.
Why that matters for a replacement pump
This is one of the small compatibility details that can decide whether a replacement is easy or turns into a plumbing project. Two pumps can have the same horsepower and voltage but put the discharge in different places.
The Matrix design gives you more flexibility because the strainer housing/discharge orientation can be changed instead of forcing the pool plumbing to meet one fixed outlet position.
Does rotating the discharge make every old setup compatible?
No. You still need to verify the 1-1/2-inch plumbing connections, the physical space around the pump, the suction-side alignment, and the electrical setup. The rotatable discharge solves one geometry problem, not all of them.
Why I would check this before buying
If you are replacing a failed pump, take a photo of the old pump and note whether the discharge leaves the pump upward or sideways. That one-minute check makes it much easier to understand whether the SP1592’s convertible orientation actually helps your installation.
