Can the Hayward SP1592 Be Used With a Sand Filter?
Back to my Hayward SP1592 ownership story
Short answer: yes. The SP1592 is not limited to cartridge-filter setups. Hayward has sold the SP1592 1 HP Power-Flo Matrix pump as part of an 18-inch ProSeries sand-filter system, including 1-1/2-inch suction/discharge hose.
Does that mean it works with every sand filter?
No. A factory pairing proves that the pump can be used in a sand-filter system; it does not prove that every sand filter is correctly sized for it. Filter flow limits, valve size, plumbing, and the rest of the pool system still matter.
What should I compare?
Check the sand filter’s model and maximum/design flow information, the multiport valve size, the plumbing diameter, and the pump’s 1 HP / 115V specifications. If you are replacing only the pump in a system that previously used an SP1592, the job is much more straightforward than mixing unrelated equipment.
Useful clue from Hayward’s own system
Hayward’s 18-inch ProSeries package parts list identifies an SP1592 pump, a 1-1/2-inch Vari-Flo valve, and 1-1/2-inch suction/discharge hose. That is a useful reference point when you are trying to understand how this pump is normally paired.
