Which Speed Should You Use on a Dremel 7700 for Dog Nails?
Use the low 10,000 RPM setting on a Dremel 7700 for dog nails, not the high 20,000 RPM setting. Dremel’s current pet-grooming guidance sets a maximum of 12,000 RPM. Of the 7700’s two speeds, only low falls within that guidance.
This answers the speed question separately from my experience using the Dremel 7700 for dog nails.
Why low is the useful setting
The 7700 is an older two-speed tool. There’s no variable-speed dial to estimate: low is 10,000 RPM and high is 20,000 RPM. More speed isn’t the goal here. Nail grinding creates heat, and a faster setting can heat a nail quickly.
Low speed is only one part of safe grooming. The abrasive, pressure and time spent on each nail matter too.
Keep each touch short
Use light, brief touches and lift the abrasive away between them. Check the nail often and don’t hold the grinder against one spot. Avoid the quick, the living part inside the nail. Keep fur, loose clothing and your fingers away from rotating parts, and follow the tool and accessory instructions, including eye protection.
Let your dog get used to the sound before touching a nail. Stop if your dog becomes stressed, struggles or seems uncomfortable. If you can’t identify how much nail is safe to remove, ask a veterinarian or experienced groomer to show you. Don’t try to finish one more nail at the cost of a painful experience.
Check the accessory too
Use an abrasive intended for nail grooming and confirmed to fit your tool. An accessory’s maximum speed rating is not a recommended speed for pet nails. A sanding band fitting the shaft also doesn’t prove that a separate guard or newer attachment fits the 7700.

Do you need a different tool?
If your 7700 works well on low, you don’t need a new tool just because it’s older. If it needs replacing and dog nails are your main use, a dedicated pet-grooming kit is worth comparing.

The Dremel 7350-PET is a rechargeable pet-nail tool with a single 12,000 RPM speed. Check the Dremel 7350-PET kit on Amazon #ad. This is a replacement tool, not a battery or attachment for the 7700.
