Why Martingale Collars Are the Only Collars I Buy for My Dogs Now
At this point, if I am buying a regular walking collar for one of my dogs, I buy a martingale.
That became my preference after using them rather than because I decided one day to become a collar expert. The collar is part of the same everyday walking setup as my VIVAGLORY two-handle leash, while our long-lived MidWest crates cover a very different kind of dog control.
I like the limited-slip idea: when there is leash pressure, the collar tightens some; when the pressure stops, it loosens again. With the ones I use, I get better control without wanting a collar that just keeps tightening.
My short version: martingale collars are now the only collar style I routinely purchase for my dogs. I have bought several JOYEEIIOO versions in different colors and sizes. Proper fit matters, and I do not treat the collar as a substitute for training.

What I like about the martingale design
The useful part for me is that the collar responds when a dog moves against the leash and then immediately relaxes again when that pressure is gone.
That feels different to me from putting a dog on an unrestricted slip collar.
The Veterinary Centers of America describes a properly fitted martingale as a limited-slip collar that can reduce the risk of a dog backing out of a collar, while emphasizing that fit is important and that the collar should not be used as a punitive training device.
That is closer to how I think about mine: control and security, not punishment.
I am careful about saying ‘it doesn’t choke’
In casual conversation I have said that I like the way mine tighten without choking my dogs.
The more precise version is that a properly fitted martingale is designed to limit how far it tightens.
If it is adjusted incorrectly, it can be uncomfortable or unsafe. VCA specifically warns that martingales need appropriate fit and supervision.
So I would not copy my dog’s collar size from an article. I would measure the dog and follow fit instructions for the exact collar.
Why I like the quick-release buckle

That matters to me because I want to be able to put the collar on and take it off without feeding the whole thing over the dog’s head every time.

Some product listings use ‘no pull’ language very aggressively.
I would not buy one thinking the collar teaches the dog how to walk politely.
VCA’s current guidance explicitly says a martingale is not recommended as a training tool by itself. Leash manners still have to come from training and handling.
For me, the collar is equipment. The dog still needs guidance.
Would I keep buying martingale collars?
Yes. I already do.
I like the limited-slip behavior, I like the extra sense of control, and the quick-release versions are convenient.
That does not make every martingale or every fit automatically safe. It makes the design the one that has worked best for me and my dogs.
