Bangrui Electric Can Opener Review: The Weird Little Replacement I Ended Up Loving
For years, we had a can opener that did its job so quietly that I barely thought about it.
Then it stopped working. It is a small convenience rather than a major appliance, but that is also what I appreciate about slow-cooker liners and the genuinely useful features of my Hamilton Beach food processor.
That should have been an easy replacement. Instead, I bought a conventional electric can opener that I thought was garbage.

So I tried something that looked a little strange: a Bangrui automatic can opener that sits on top of the can, travels around the rim, and cuts the lid without leaving the kind of sharp edge I was used to.
I am very happy with it.
My short version: I bought the Bangrui in December 2024 after being disappointed with another electric can opener. It has worked well, battery life has been fine for us, the cut edge is smooth, and I like that the removed lid can sit back on the can temporarily.
Why I ended up trying the Bangrui
The funny thing is that I was not searching for a better can-opening experience until the old opener died.
We had used the same one for years. It was just part of the kitchen. When it finally quit, I bought a POHL SCHMITT countertop electric opener in 2021.
I did not like that replacement.
By 2024 I was willing to try a completely different design, partly because the little top-mounted opener looked interesting.
How this kind of opener is different

The smooth edge is not just marketing to me
This is probably the feature I appreciate most.
Once the lid is removed, I can actually set it back on top of the can if I need to cover the contents temporarily. I am not suggesting a loose lid turns an opened can into long-term food storage. I simply like that the lid is not a jagged metal disc that I immediately want out of the way.
Battery life has been a non-issue
I believe I have changed the batteries only two or three times since we have had it.
I did not log battery dates, so I am not going to turn that into an exact runtime claim. My point is simply that battery consumption has not become an annoyance.
Does it struggle with certain cans?
I do not have a particular can type that stands out as a repeated problem.
That does not mean every can in the world is guaranteed to work. It means that in normal use around our kitchen, I have been satisfied enough that I kept using this instead of shopping for another opener.
Why I prefer it to the conventional replacement I bought
This is not a laboratory comparison. I owned both products and strongly preferred the Bangrui.
The first replacement did not make me happy. The Bangrui did. It is small, it works, it leaves a smooth edge, and I do not have to dedicate a tall chunk of counter space to a can opener.
That is enough for me.
Would I buy the Bangrui electric can opener again?
Yes.
It is a good example of why I sometimes like trying a different design instead of buying another version of the thing that disappointed me.
I did not need a can opener with a bunch of extra features. I needed the can to open without turning the lid into a tiny circular saw blade.
